Investigating the mediating role of parental self-efficacy in the relationship between emotion regulation and alexithymia with parent-child relationship in single mothers

Abstract

Objective: Mother's emotional regulation and alexithymia have an effect on the quality of her relationship with her child. The aim of the present study was to investigate the mediating role of parental self-efficacy in emotional regulation and alexithymia with parent-child relationship in single mothers.
Methods: The present study was descriptive and correlational. For this purpose, the number of 200 single mothers with children aged 3-16 living in Tehran in 2019, were selected by convenience sampling method. Then, participants filled out Child-Parent Relationship Scale (CPRS), Parental Self-Efficacy Questionnaire, Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ) and Toronto Alexithymia Questionnaire through a virtual link. Correlation and path analysis methods were used to analyze the data.
Results: The results showed that there is a significant and indirect relationship between alexithymia and parent-child communication (P<0.05). There was a significant and direct relationship between emotion regulation and the intimacy subscale of the child's parent relationship, and there was a significant and indirect relationship with the dependency subscale (p<0.05). Also, parental self-efficacy had a significant and direct relationship with parent-child communication and emotional regulation, and a significant and indirect relationship with alexithymia, and emotion regulation and alexithymia, mediated by parental self-efficacy, had an indirect and significant effect on child-parent communication.
Conclusion: Parental self-efficacy plays a mediating role in regulating emotion and alexithymia with parent-child relationship; Therefore, it is possible to help improve parental self-efficacy and parent-child relationship by teaching emotional regulation methods and improving alexithymia, especially to single mothers who suffer more parental stress.
