Abstract

Objective: The present study aimed to compare the effectiveness of parenting training and parent-child interventions in improving psychological flexibility and self-differentiation among mothers of children with learning disabilities.
Methods: This semi-experimental study employed a pretest-posttest design with a control group. The study's statistical population included children aged 6–11 with specific learning disabilities and their mothers who referred to educational counseling centers in Tehran. Based on inclusion criteria, 60 mothers were selected using convenience sampling and then randomly assigned to two experimental groups and one control group. The parenting training program consisted of 8 sessions, while the parent-child intervention comprised 10 sessions, with two 90-minute meetings per week. Psychological flexibility was measured using the Cognitive Flexibility Questionnaire by Dennis & Vander Wal (2010), and self-differentiation was assessed with the Self-Differentiation Questionnaire by Jackson (2003). Data were analyzed using SPSS version 26.
Results: The analysis of mean differences indicated that the parent-child intervention group had a greater positive impact on psychological flexibility, with a mean difference of 8.74 compared to the parenting training group. In contrast, parenting training based on the Lynn Clark model showed a more substantial effect on mothers’ self-differentiation, with a mean difference of 50.55 compared to the parent-child intervention group.
Conclusion: Mothers’ self-perception significantly influences their interactions and effective communication with children who have learning disabilities. Therefore, both parent-child play therapy and parenting skills training can be effective in enhancing the outcomes of family therapy, psychological flexibility, and self-differentiation in mothers.
