Purpose: This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of group-based positive cognitive behavioral therapy on resilience, hope, and severity of bereavement symptoms in bereaved adolescents.
Method: The current research is a quasi-experimental study with a pre-test-post-test design with a control group. The statistical population consisted of all bereaved adolescents of Tabriz city in 2023. From this population, 20 people were recruited by purposeful sampling and randomly assigned to the experimental (10 individuals) and the control group (10 individuals). Ten sessions of positive cognitive behavioral therapy were administered to the experimental group. Data collection tools included The Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (2003), Adult Domain-Specific Hope Scale (1999), and inventory of complicated grief (1995), completed by both control and experimental groups before and after the intervention. The data were analyzed by analysis of covariance using SPSS-34.
Results: It was found that group-based positive cognitive behavioral therapy significantly improved resilience (F = 16.87, P < 0.001) and hope (F = 16.63, P < 0.001). Also, the treatment resulted in significant improvement in the severity of bereavement symptoms (F=27.36, P<0.001) in the experimental group.
Discussion: In conclusion, positive cognitive behavioral therapy is an effective intervention approach for treatment of the bereaved adolescents. Therefore, it is suggested that child and adolescent psychotherapists include components of positive psychology, such as improvement of hope, resilience and self-esteem, in order to reduce the symptoms of complex grief in adolescents.
