Objective: This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of emotion-focused therapy on emotion regulation difficulties, self-compassion, and impulsivity in adolescents with conduct disorder.Conduct disorder is one of the impulse control disorders.
Methods: A quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design with a control group was employed. Forty adolescents (16-18 years) with conduct disorder were selected from Ardabil counseling centers and randomly assigned to experimental (n=20) and control (n=20) groups. The experimental group received 8 sessions of group emotion-focused therapy. Data were collected using the DERS, SCS, and BIS-11 scales and analyzed by MANCOVA and ANCOVA.
Results: The multivariate test showed a significant difference between the groups (P < 0.001, η² = 0.883). Univariate analyses indicated that emotion-focused therapy significantly reduced emotion regulation difficulties and impulsivity, and increased self-compassion in the experimental group (P < 0.001 for all).
Conclusion: Group emotion-focused therapy is an effective intervention for improving emotion regulation, reducing impulsivity, and enhancing self-compassion in adolescents with conduct disorder.
